The rosy-red Chestnut crabapple produces fruit that is unusually large for a crabapple with a nutty taste.

The fruit has yellow and bronze-red skin with some russeting and crisp, juicy, fine-grained, sweet yellow flesh. It may be thought of as the apple version of “Sun Gold” tomatoes. Eat chestnut simply out of hand, although it needs no sugar to make a sweet and subtle sauce.

This annual bearer produces 2" pale yellow crabapples with streaky red blushes and some russeting. Creamy white flesh is fine-grained and crisp, with a sweet, nut-like flavor that is great for fresh eating, cooking or making jellies. Tree is vigorous and hardy and adapts well to different soil types. Developed at the University of Minnesota in 1946. Cold-hardy. Ripens in early September. Resistant to Cedar Rust

Requires a pollinator of a different apple variety that blooms around the same time. Like other crabapples and applecrabs, this variety is an excellent pollinator thanks to its large number of blossoms. This variety also flowers over a long period of time which improves its pollination abilities.
